The equipment is used for various operations, such as lifting, loading and transportation. It is used in trestles, manufacturing and industrial enterprises. Among its distinctive features are versatility and small dimensions.

An overhead crane is a metal bridge with a movable part. An electric hoist on a lifting device moves along the main beam supported by rails. Such structures are installed at industrial sites, in workshops or factories, under the ceiling. The whole mechanism is controlled by one operator who sits in a designated cabin or at a control panel installed on the floor.

The structure consists of the following parts:

• end beams: help to ensure its movement along monorails;
• span beams: ensure the movement of a lifting mechanism;
• lifting mechanisms: an electric or hand hoist can be used as an alternative.

The structures are divided into two main types: overrunning and suspension types upon which depends the price of equipment. The first type is considered more reliable, more serviceable, less likely to fail. It is mounted at open and closed platforms, allowing you to move objects close to the wall. Suspension-type overhead cranes are installed if the device travel ways are higher than the plane of movement of the beam itself. These are characterized by easy installation and operation.

Specifications

The mechanism's main technical feature is a limit weight of cargo upon which also depends its price. You can buy overrunning cranes with a lifting capacity of 10 tons or suspension ones with that of 5 tons. Other characteristics:

• span: varies between 3 and 29 meters;
• lift height: the overrunning structure rises up to 18 meters, and the suspension one up to 36 meters;
• travel speed: from 24 to 30 m/min;
• Current frequency and voltage: overhead cranes are powered with 380V, 50 Hz current.

The latest models are used in any environment and are easy in operation. They operate at temperatures ranging from +20°С to +40°С. The equipment price depends on its lifting capacity and span length.

Overhead cranes have some advantages over bridge structures. First of all, there is no need to use auxiliary facilities or hire crane operators. This considerably reduces the cost price of products manufactured by the enterprise. Secondly, low weight reduces the load on supporting components, which decreases the final price and installation time.

The operator who controls the device better sees and assesses the situation during the movement of goods. This improves the safety of transportation works. Also, overhead cranes are of less complex structure, so they are generally lower-priced.

Overhead cranes undergo the complete cycle of operations at the speed of approximately 0.5-1 m/s. This cycle includes a working travel with a cargo, unloading at the end point and an idling travel back to the initial point. The use of a certain type of device is determined by the enterprise where the overhead crane installation takes place. Recently, such cranes have been used only indoors, but, to the best of our knowledge, there are also models manufactured for outdoor open trestles and available at lower prices. Such mechanisms are different from standard ones as they have additional devices for protection against the external environment.

During installation, the first step is to mount end beams and further attach them to the main crane runway. After that, a span beam is lifted to the required height to be fixed above. At the final stage, end and bearing components are fastened together. This type of crane equipment allows the use of space near walls, which maximizes its effectiveness. Additional options can save time and simplify the operation and repair of such equipment.
