Types of hoists

Depending on your task, the device has several types. Hoists are divided into:

Hand hoists are characterized by their simple design due to the fact that it does not contain any complex elements for their installation. They are budget-friendly and easy to maintain. Electric hoists are quicker in lifting loads than hand ones. They are fastened onto a monorail and move cargos in horizontal plane.

Hand hoists: characteristics

Hand hoists include a hook suspension (hook and chain) and a lifting mechanism. The latter includes a manually driven reduction gear, an automatic load sustaining brake and a chain pulley block. The reduction gear is actuated using a closed circuit. The load sustaining brake allows the object to be fixed at a given height.

Gear-type hand hoists are used to lift loads to a higher height. They are suspended under an intermediate slab and controlled from the ground. This type is completed with a cargo-handling and controlling chain. A load is suspended to the first one, and the second one puts a lifting mechanism into operation.

The lever-type version does not have a controlling chain in its scope of supply as it is replaced with a lever located on the device's case. The operator must be close to the point of hoist attachment and put a lifting chain into motion. This device is used in pits, sewage conduits or wells, as well as for operation in confined spaces. Lever-type hoists allow the movement of cargos in their horizontal position.

Special aspects related to electric hoists

Unlike hand hoists operating through the operator's efforts, electric ones are controlled by the control panel (included in the scope of supply). The device is equipped with an alternating-current motor (220-380V, 50Hz).

Electric hoists (or telphers) include the following parts:

• an electric motor;
• a reduction gear;
• a sprocket (chain-type) or drum (rope-type);
• a load-gripping component;
• a brake.

For safety reasons, the device has a brake that comes into action in case of a power failure or voltage surge.

The load-gripping component is equipped with various suspensions allowing the gripping of any cargo. Additionally, a special coupling is installed to limit a cargo being moved. It ensures the hoist's nominal operation mode. Besides, the electric motor's thermal protection device extends the service life of the device.

Telphers can be equipped with a micro-drive that helps to change the speed of movement of a cargo. A cargo is accurately transported to a specified place if this operation is performed at low speed. Such devices are double-speed. In the absence of a micro-drive, hoists are single-speed. A special box is installed to put a chain in.

Installation of rope-type or chain-type telphers

To move a cargo by an electric telpher in horizontal plane, the device is mounted on a monorail track. For this purpose, a flexible current lead to the hoist takes place by means of:

• a non-twisting double-lay rope;
• a slack adjuster;
• a cable clamp;
• a slip connection suspension;
• an end connection suspension;
• a cable connecting sleeve;
• a steel dead-eye for a rope;
• brackets made of angle elements and sheet steel.

Flexible current leads are made as per the 5.407-115 series. When calculating the cable length between sliding connection points, an allowance of at least 1.5 m is provided.

As a rule, flexible 4-wire cables (3 phases (3P) + grounding core (protective conductor)) are ordered. The type and section of cables are taken subject to the load current and voltage loss in the supply network. The minimum section of a grounding core (cables with copper cores) must be at least 1 sq mm.

A cable laid from the point of hoist powering is ordered in a PVC jacket (3Р+protective conductor) and is put through a box with breaker and fuse (PN2-100).

Price

The price of hoists is affected by the weight of a cargo to be lifted. For a small workshop, hoists with a lifting capacity of up to 1 ton will be a suitable option. They will cost much cheaper than devices of up to 25 tons designed for industrial premises.

The second factor is their design. In case of climate-related design (temperature ranges from -40 to 60°C), the price is low. It increases for the fire-proof and chemically protected types of design.

Hoists are chosen subject to preliminary calculations. To choose a hoist correctly, it is necessary to take into account the following parameters:

• cargo lifting and movement speeds;

• construction depth requirements.

A manually controlled hoist will be suitable for construction works (wall finishing). It is most often used for small workshops or buildings to which no electricity is supplied.
